What I love about this show is that the characters will make you remember and remind you of someone you actually know in real life- a childhood friend, a colleague, a family member or a relative, a classmate, you name it.Īnd that says a lot about the show’s authenticity, because they basically make you feel like you are part of their journey as well. There’s an obvious disconnect and that is such a no-no for me because once the characters feel a bit try hard and fake, everything will crumble as well. I hate it whenever a show, most especially its characters, feel inauthentic. To make it short, Lee Sung Kyung as Kim Bok Joo is LOVE. You will feel like a champion with her dreams & triumphs, and just like her, you will feel ashamed, embarrassed, and in love. She has managed to give the character her own life- you won’t see Lee Sung Kyung the top model on this one, what you will see is an insecure, young girl who is ready to explore life and go out of her comfort zone. She nailed all the necessary emotions to bring Bok Joo into life. Insecure, tough, in love, ashamed, funny, real. While Lee Sung Kyung doesn’t fit your typical Kdramaland-leading lady mold, I don’t think there’s anyone else who can perfectly portray the role of the lead character in this particular show aside from herself. And you will end up loving the actors who brought life to the characters with these feelings and their effective portrayals.ġ.) Lee Sung Kyung as the titular Kim Bok Joo. Just realistic characterizations: sad, emotional, insecure. I must also add that there are no bad and evil characters in this show. The complete mixture of love, friendship, family, and themes such as self-insecurity & empowerment made this show a real champion. This show, although sugar-coated and looking all hip and glossy, is actually a slice of life itself. It made me appreciate everything about life. It made me feel how lovely it was to become young again. But the writers made me feel that I was actually living the main character’s life.

I instantly fell in love with the show’s vibe: simple, youthful, stress-free. If I were to describe how I felt just from watching the first episode, I will definitely just use a lot of sparkly-pink- emojis and call it a day. Right off the bat, the show has managed to bring out all the emotions in me. Until I gave in and finally decided to give this show a chance.Īnd oh boy, perhaps one of the best decisions I have ever made in my entire life.Ī coming-of-age story about a group of college athletes who are fighting for their dreams, experiencing and finding love in the process, and growing every step of the way. And while I normally don’t base my opinion on ratings, the show’s disappointing numbers didn’t help too. Too much sugar and fluff I guess.Īdd to that the fact that I misjudged the lead actress based on her character’s look (Yeah, I know, bite me now). I simply don’t like the idea of fluffy love stories set in a campus or university. First, I wasn’t a fan of school/university-themed dramas. I was actually very skeptical to watch this show. Without a doubt, this show was an instant-classic and will be remembered by many generations of Kdrama lovers to come.
